Ketorade and the Importance of Electrolytes

You NEED to make sure you are consuming electrolytes on keto. 

What are electrolytes?  

Minerals found in the body that act as signal molecules to make the body function correctly. 

You know. like you heart and other muscles. and those are pretty important. 

Ever get a leg cramp?  Not enough electrolytes. 

Na+ Sodium 

K+  Potassium

Cl- Chlorine

Ca2+ Calcium

Mg2+ Magnesium 

Why do you need them?

When you start keto, your body releases water instead of storing it on your glycogen molecules in your muscles. 

Also, since you are leveling off your insulin, your body tells the kidneys to get rid of water and store less.  

In the water you release (Urine), you also lose a crap ton of electrolytes. 

This can cause you to get the dreaded "Keto Flu", and no one wants that.

How to get these important electrolytes

Na (Sodium):  add salt to your food!   Drink bouillon cube broth.  Eat already salty foods like pickles and porkrinds.

K (Potassium): Eat things like avocados, leafy greens, mushrooms, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon.  You can also use salt mixes like Morton's lite salt, which is half Sodium, half Potassium.

Mg (Magnesium): We take a magnesium supplement. You should probably do the same. pumpkin seeds, cocoa powder, fish, and leafy greens like spinach will put this into your system!

Ca (Calcium): your dairy will provide you with this. Also, you can get it from bone broths, and green veggies! Broccoli has a bunch.  Remember though, sunlight helps the body use calcium with vitamin D.  Get some sun, people!

Cl (Chloride): You can get this with your salt and potassium shaker. Both Sodium and Potassium salt bind with chlorine.

You could also make KetorAde to help with some of these! 

1/4 tsp Morton's lite salt

1/4 Pink salt

A couple squirts of Electrolyte MiO (we use walmart brand)

32 Oz of cold, filtered water

Mix and drink!

 If we are ever feeling crappy, we usually drink one of these down and feel much better.  Super important if you go out for a few drinks too!
