Stuff no one tells you about keto

1. Poop.

  • Your poop schedule is going to change. Some people become constipated. Some people get the runs. But after you keto adapt, your will be fine. If just starting introduce the high levels of fat over time. Your body may thank you later. If you are NOT pooping, make sure to eat fiber rich veggies!

2. Pee.

  • You are going to pee A LOT, especially in the start. Drinking water is super important and you will drink lots. You will also lose water weight in the start, which leaves the body as pee. Also. It will smell.

  • Your pee should be almost clear, this indicates you are hydrated. If it is yellow or dark, you NEED to drink more water!

3. $.

  • You will spend less money on food than in the past. two reasons. You will eat less. and you will buy less junk. In the start you may drop some cash getting all the stuff people say you "need". But do Not waste your money on fad stuff trying to take your hard earned bacon money. All you need for this lifestyle is food! Real friggen food!

  • You will need to buy new clothes though. Because you will change your size and shape rather quickly.

4. It takes time.

  • You didn't get fat in a day. You need to give keto time for weigh loss. Though in the forst few weeks you SHOULD drop 7-10lbs, it does slow down to about 1-2lbs a week. Which is awesome, because it is fat.

5. You can gain the weight back.

  • You never lose fat cells, they just shrink. If you go back to the way of eating that made you fat, you will gain weight again. Very quickly might I add. Fat cells WANT to be filled. and LOVE to be filled.

  • Keto is not a "Diet". It is a change of life. Once you hit your goal weight, you may stick around for maintenance, or switch to a new lifestyle like paleo. But, when you reintroduce carbs, you will gain back water weight, about 10 lbs.

6. Keto flu.

  • This sucks donkey balls. In the start your body is kinda like, Whoa whoa whoa! Your body hasn't run on ketos, probably ever, so it needs time to adjust to a new fuel source.

  • Get in your electrolytes. Use lite salt on everything. Drink Broth. Make ketoaide . It really does help!

7. Exercise is not needed but good! lift weights. don't run.

  • You don't need to exercise to lose weight on keto. What you put in your mouth is really what matters in weight loss.

  • If you want to work out, please do. Just know that you will have less energy in the start.

  • Too much cardio will cause you to stall.

  • Lift weights, put on muscle, burn fat.

  • Ladies, lifting weights will not make you huge (Unless that's what you are going for). Relax

8. People will judge you.

  • People will hate you for doing this. They will think it is super unhealthy. They will share their advice as they slurp down a frosty and shove pizza in their pie hole while unbuckling their pants to fit. Given, people have been fed bad information about health and fats for a long time.

9. People will try to get you off keto.

  • Just like number 8, people will want you off of keto, mainly because they don't understand.

10. You will talk about keto a LOT.

  • You will research keto, or at least you should. You will think about it all the time. Lots of people won't care. Calm down. Just like us. we talk about it to people and write about it. When I started, anyone who asked why I was eating a bunless burger got an earful. Now. I try to keep it to keto people and myself. No one cares about what you are doing, other than you and others doing the same.

11. You will want to change everyone.

  • You will want to run up to everyone who is overweight and preach about keto. Don't do that. Not everyone wants to change. Let people ask you when they are ready.

12. You Will stop wanting sweets.

  • In the start, the carb cravings are real. But if you stay away from fake sugars, low carb fruits, and fake breads, you should be fine in a few weeks.

  • Cake no longer haunts me. French fries are no longer a temptation.

13. Hunger goes away.

  • One reason for weight loss on keto is the caloric deficit you will have. You will eat less. Fat and protein will keep you satiated. Some people have trouble even eating to their macros, they usually take up intermittent fasting.

14. Calories DO matter.

  • No matter what you do, calories DO matter. It is a scientific law. The Law of Conservation of Energy. If you consume too many calories you will gain weight.

  • I wouldn't worry too much in the first week or so, but you should really record what you eat.

15. Your breath will stink.

  • Ketosis produces ketones. One of the said ketones is acetone. You expel it in your breath. Some people say it is almost a metallic taste. Personally, I think it is just a terrible breath problem. It seems to go away once you have keto adapted. Though I still hate breathing on people.

16. Your pee will stink.

  • Same as above. You can tell you are in ketosis by smelling your pee.

17. You will have to buy new clothes.

  • Clothes will no longer fit. I suggest buying cheap clothes from a thrift store or a place like kohls while losing. You will go through so many sizes and waste a ton of money if you buy expensive stuff. If you can afford it, buy nice stuff, but know it will not be around long.

18. You will have to learn to cook.

  • Real food needs to be cooked. You will need to learn some basic stuff to make food. If you can't cook, you will learn.

19. You will try new things.

  • Both in food and life. New meals are a pleasure to make and try. New veggies or old ones cooked in a new manner.

  • Since you will feel better and look different, you may try new activities. I know some people who could finally fit a roller coaster seat. Props to you.

20. Your confidence will go through the roof.

  • New clothes, new sizes, new face, compliments, questions and asking for advice will make you feel great. When you feel great, you look great. When you look and feel great you will have huge confidence.

21. Don't always trust your scale.

  • So you didn't lose weight this week. Don't let that stop you. You may have clothes that fit better now or your measurements have changed. The scale is not the end all if it doesn't change.

  • Either weigh yourself once a week at the same time, or everyday at the same time and RECORD IT. You will be able to see trends in the daily weight gain and loss.

22. The first ten or so pounds is water.

  • Yup. Crappy to think about, but that quick weight loss is water weight. Your body stores water on glycogen (Sugar) molecules within your muscles. You will go through your glycogen rather quick. Once it is gone that water has to go somewhere..

23. After the first month, it becomes an easy habit.

  • At first keto is tough, especially if you were a heavy carb eater. Once you get over the hump, keto is easy to stick to. You will get use to looking at food labels and figuring out what is in your food. It becomes a second nature to eat right.

24. People will tell you that you need to stop because you are getting too skinny.

  • This just recently happened to me. Everyone is so use to you being overweight, that once you start to lose, people think you look weird. I was told by TWO people that they thought I had cancer. Really? It kind of upset me and I even thought about stopping keto. But fuck them. I need to get healthy, this is for me. Just because I look different doesn't mean I need to stop.

25. People will be afraid to mention you have lost weight due to fear of sickness

  • Like above, people normally think that weight loss goes hand in hand with sickness. Some people will be afraid to even mention your weight loss because they may think you are sick. People do notice. You will be asked over and over about keto.

26. Hangovers suck way more.

  • Since the liver breaks down fats for energy while making ketones, when you drink, that same liver switches over to burning booze for energy (which is easier). You also will pee a TON, when you do, you lose your electrolytes. This drains your body and makes you feel like shit.

  • Make sure to replace your electrolytes!

27. You will want to quit. Don't do that.

  • This is a problem in the start. Remember WHY you started and why you want to get healthy.

  • Don't even have cheat days, it will make stuff tough. You CAN do it.

28. Your skin may clear up.

  • Sugar spikes insulin. Insulin causes inflammation. Some zits are caused by inflammation. You will also be eating less processed garbage. This will get rid of all the crappy chemicals and fake fats in your diet.

29. You may lose hair in the start.

  • Lots of weight loss causes hair loss. My wife was very concerned about how much she was losing. She has been taking collagen and biotin along with her vitamins for a bit now and I have not heard her say anything about it for a while. It didn't happen to me, that I know of anyway.

  • Take your vitamins with fat, this helps the body absorb them.

30. Get your carbs from veggies!

  • Try your best to stay away from processed keto junk. Eat veggies for carbs. They are full of important vitamins and minerals. AND FIBER! (keep yourself regular!)

31. Not all fake sugar are equal!

  • Some fake sugars can cause blood sugar spikes. Stay away from maltitol. This is found in MOST "Low-Carb" processed foods. It actually raises your blood sugar more than some natural sugars. Here is a link to more information on sugar and sugar substitutes

32. Everyone is different.

  • Remember, your body is yours. It may run different than someone else's. Don't worry yourself by comparing you to them.

33. Never trust a keto fart.

  • Ever. It is just a poor choice.

34. Vitamins are important.

  • Take a good Multivitamin.

  • I also take Biotin, Vitamin C, and Magnesium (this one is important, it is an electrolyte)

35. Your food does not have to be organic.

  • I mean it is nice. But is it really necessary to drain your wallet? Probably not. Is it better for the environment ? Totally.

  • You should probably buy from LOCAL ORGANIC FARMS instead of organic from the market though.

36. You don't NEED expensive butter.

  • Grass fed cows make better butter. But do you need it? Na. Does it taste better? Yes.

  • Is it super expensive? Yeah, compared to grain fed cow butter.

37. You will become a happier person.

  • Self confidence rises. Your clothes fit better. You will be in a better mood.

  • So yes. You will be happier.

38. Peanut butter is a slippery slop.

  • 1 TBSP is 100 calories. and NO one eats just one.

39. Fake low carb food is not helpful.

  • Eat real food. Cook. Enjoy. Processed food stuff is garbage. Most low carb food has trash for fake sugars that spike your blood sugar anyway.

40. High fat foods taste awesome.

  • Butter? Bacon? Steak? Olive oil? ALL AMAZING!

  • Fat is what makes food taste good. Take it out and food must be filled with sugar to try to make it taste better, EAT FAT LOSE FAT.

41. Bacon.

  • Enough said.

42. Take Photos!

  • Seriously. They help you when you are feeling down. ANd if the scale doesn't move they can totally show you changes in your body shape and size.

  • Also. Who doesn't like to see transformations.

43. Set SMALL goals that you can reach.

  • Don't just set the goal of " In a month I will lose 40lbs" Because you really can't control that.

  • Stick with goals like:

Today I will walk.

Today I will hit my macros.

Today I will not touch that damn peanut butter.

Today I will drink all of my water.

Today I will try a new recipe.

  • Small steps let you go for a while, while sprints drain you.

44. Protein is a limit.

  • Eat all your protein.

  • Everyday.

  • It is super important to keep your muscle mass.

45. Research!

The internet is a wonderful place full of great information! Don't stick to one page. Read what people have to say! Here is a list of awesome stuff!
