Doesn’t Fat Make You Fat?

We have all heard that fat is bad for us. It has been impregnated into out temporal lobe since 1955.

Why do we think this?

A study called the lipid hypothesis was done by Ancel Keys in the 50’s that turned fat into a demon. Most people STILL think this is true.

I’ll give you the spark notes:

Ancel said “Hey. Fat is bad. It causes high cholesterol and that causes heart disease. See, here is a graph with countries and their fat consumption. Though I DON'T WANT TO SHOW YOU ALL THE DATA."

"Fake fats are good”

The American Heart Association was like “Yeah, that sounds good!” and they started to emphasize low fat diets for better health.

Everyone was like "Pssssh, they MUST know what they are talking about!"

And that’s where we are now.

You can buy low-fat almost anything! I am sure if you have ever tried to lose weight you have done this. Did you lose weight? Did you gain weight? Were you super hungry the whole time?

Fat adds flavor to food, when it is taken out of processed food, the food taste like crap. How does one make the food taste better? Add a shit ton of sugar!!

Look at this low-fat yogurt. LOOK AT IT!

That is almost as much sugar as a can of soda.

(I hate that my kid eats this stuff.)

As low fat foods hit the market by storm, American obesity levels did not go down. Rather it got higher than ever. Strange how the sales of these low-fat foods went up and so did pant size.

More sugar = more weight gain.

If you read your nutrition labels (please do!) you will find sugar in items that you would never think would have them.

SCIENCE!!

What does fat do for us?

Fat is stored energy. When you have too much energy in your system, your body stores it in our personal self storage containers called fat cells. That energy is stored in said fat cells much quicker if your insulin levels are high because you chomped down a sugar drenched candy bar filled with peanut butter!

This fat will be used in time of need. Like starvation. or fasting. or when you are in ketosis, which is basically tricking your body into thinking it is starving, while you shove bacon down your face hole.

We NEED fat in our diet: It keeps your brain and nerves functioning correctly, keeps your skin and other tissues happy, moves vitamins around the body through the blood stream and hormones are made of fats! if your hormones have ever been out of whack you know how crappy that is! (Moms I'm looking at you!)

The fat cells in your body NEVER go away. They just shrink. The healthy adult normally has anywhere from 20 - 27 billion fat cells. While the typical obese adult can range from 75- 300 billion cells. Yes that's right. If you are obese not only have you filled your fat cells, they decided to make more for all that extra energy. Like my belly for instance.

What about when you eat fat!?

When you eat fat, you are providing your body 9 calories for every gram of fat.

Calories are not BAD! Calories just represent how much ENERGY is in the food you are going to eat. More Calories = More Energy

As stated in previous posts, your body likes sugar because it is easy to use and gives you quick energy. But! it LOVES to run on fat! The problem we face is that we eat BOTH high fat AND high sugar. This causes our body to become hoarders of energy, instead of stupid shit you fill your house with.

If no (or very Low) carbohydrates are present in the diet, your body starts to change its fuel source. Your Liver starts to break down fatty acids from your food OR from your body into Ketone Bodies. These ketone bodies are then uses as a fuel source for the brain. The brain really likes ketones and causes you to be very alert and full of energy.

Calories DO count in keto. Since your body will be breaking down fat cells for energy you are less likely to become hungry, thus you eat LESS calories and are at a deficit. So by eating LESS and burning your fat as fuel you lose weight rather quickly.

You will know your body is making ketones because you will get a weird smell in your breath, almost fruity or like that of nail polish remover (this goes away after you are fat adapted). Your pee will also start to smell quite strong. Asparagus?

If you are lean and maintaining your weight, eating fat is very important for keto.

If you are overweight, you have your own source of fat, you will not need as much.

Try to stay away from super fatty things like “Fat Bombs”, these are great IF you need the fat, but otherwise just add to your calories for the day.

Side note:

Anytime you eat more calories than you burn, no matter what it is, you gain weight. That is general science. They body does not like to waste energy. Though when you eat sugar, this extra energy is stored MUCH more easily because your insulin levels are raised, storing all extra energy as fat.
